N DEMOCRATS’ SELECTION. i NEW YORK, June 21

'lt is hinted that president Wilson will nominate Mr Colby, the recently appointed Secretary of State, as a Democratic candidate for the Presidency, having kept him as a dark horse. Mr Colby is ponular with Irish Americans. NEW YORK, June 20.

San Francisco despatches state that among outstanding aspirants for the Democratic nomination for .the Presidency are Senator Owen (who is prominently connected with important Federal financial laws),; Senator Hitchcock, (the former Democratic leader* in the Senate); Governor Edwards, of New Jersey (who was elected on a platform opposed to prohibition); Governor Cox of Ohio; /Vice-President Marshall John W. Davis (Ambassador to Britain); At-torney-General Palmer; ex-Secretary (jfass; Governor Smith (of New York) Mr Gerard (ex-Ambassador to Germany) ; and Mr Colby (the present Seeie-. tnrv of State).

There is a question raised as to whether President Wilson will run for a third term. It is pointed out that he lias not yet definitely expressed his intentions in this respect. There is also some talk of nominating Mr McAdoo despite -his statement that he will not stand for nomination. INTERNATIONAL COURT. ' OTTAWA, June 20. An international commission of juris consults for the establishment of ‘an International Court of Justice has opened here. PROFITEERING. (Received This Diiv at 10.35. n.m.) NE WYORK, June 21. Federal agents' arrested Frederick Gimbel, head of the great Department stores, on a charge of profiteering. It is announced this is only the beginning of extensive prosecutions. It is alleged Ghhbels sold a mohair suit costing five dollars fifty cents, for twenty dollars, and a -suit costing tliirty-tliree dollars for seventy-five; also another costing fifteen dollars for thirty-three dollar,, seventy 7 five cents. Gimbel has been held in a thousand dollar hail for the July hearing.
