The Supreme Court yesterday morning wa s devoted to the one criminal charge on the calendar, and that of minor importance. At the afternoon sitting the hearing was commenced of a claim for £2OOO damages arising out of an accident on the Otira Gorge last year. The case for* the plaintiff had not concluded when the Court adjourned at G p.m. Tlie Court sat again at 7.30 p.m. until 11 p.m., when the hear, ing was adjourned till 10 o’clock this morning, two more witnesses for the defence having to he called. The Wetland County Council notifies in this issue that the annual generil rate will be struck at the next ordinary meeting to he held on the 6th July On this occasion tlie rate will be nine farthings, the increase being necessary to find the added sum required for ho—pitals and charitable aid maintenance.
