The American Federation of Labour convention at Montreal adopted a resolution demanding that the United States Congress shall cancel the socalled “Gentlemen’s Agreement” with Japan, and shall legislate to exclude all Orientals and specifically the “picture” brides. The Convention rejected the idea ol' iiny permanent voluntary arbitration Board. The Convention condemned legal control of industrial relations and all forms of compulsory arbitration. * It was decided to fight to a finish against all anti-strike legislation. AIICHBISH’OP mannix. NEW YORK, June 17. The “New York World” reports it received a telegram from a man named Parsons stating that when the steamer Ventura wasj leaving Honolulu a band on deck played “God Save the King” and “America.” He says the passengers stood at attention with bowed heads, but Archbishop Mannix re mained seated. The band thereupon played the “Star Spangled, Banner”. The passengers stood at attention, Archbishop Mannix •roma'ined seated. “I then approached Dr Mannix,” savs Parsons, “and I asked him whether IK. realised that this band was playing the American Anthem. Mr Mannix replied in the affirmative. I then said “Why don’t you rise?” He replied that lie didn’t care to. A number of passengers then held a meeting on the subject and sent a. radiogram to r he Hon. Mr Colby (United States Secretarv of State) on the 3rd of Jumj, signed by eleven Americans.
UNITED STATES PRESIDENCY. NE WYORK, June 16. The ‘New York World’s” Chicago correspondent asserts there is what he'calls a considerable belief in Republican circles that Senator Harding, Republican Presidential candidate may make a unique appeal to the American electorate/ by naming in advance the Cabinet appointments which many people might lie likely to receive favourably: Mr' El ill u Root or Senator Knox , for Secretary of State;'Mr Huglie s for Attorney General; Mr Frank Yanderlip for Secretary to the Treasury; General Wood for Secretary of War; ex-Senator Weeks as Secretary for the Navy; and Mr Hoover, as Secretary for' Commerce. Another report asserts that Harding may meet with some Republican opposition. The Democrats declare Harding stands for just what they oppose. .
