The funeral of Cecelia, the adoptee daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Marks tool place yesterday afternoon. Among th; mourners were the school classmates o the deceased under the Rector and tea eher’s supervision, who attended in a
body and acted as pall-liearers. The services at the residence and graveside was conducted by Rev. G. H. Bridgman. A large number of wreaths and floral emblems were placed on the grave.from sorrowing. friends including one’from the School children.
Mr James Malloy, the well-known resident of. Chesterfield, veteran prosper-, tor and pioneer, of Westland, met with rather a painful accident yesterday. He was standing on the edge of a steep embankment at Chesterfield, when the surface gave way, and in order to save him self from a severe fall jumped down about seven feet, twisting one his ankles badly in landing. He was brought into the hospital yesterday, the injured foot showing every sign of the strain, put upon it, being much s wollen and discoloured. He was made as comfortable as possible under the circumstances, his health appearing to he in no way impnred from the shock. We wish tile genial settler n speedy recovery from hj s accident-. The death occurred on Saturday evening in Wellington, afted a few days’ illness of an old S ettler, Mr Henry Prunette, for many years a resident of Nelson Creek where lie worked a claim with varying success. Deceased was born in Paris in 1833. For some years lie had been living at Nelson and Lower Hutt with his eldest daughter, Mr s C. H. Seymour.

There was a large gathering in the vicinity of the Government Buildings to-day, owftig to the sittings of the Supreme Court taking place. There was a large attendance of members of the Bar present,*including Sir John Findlay, Messrs J. Park (Crown Prosecutor;, J. A. Murdoch, W. J. Joyce, C. J. P. Sellers, Sargent, and P .J. O’Regan. *
The party of parliamentarians who have been visiting Greymouth district went north to Reefton yesterday afternoon. On behalf of the party Mr Geo. Witty M.P. rang up Hokitika and expressed to the County Chairman, Mr Bruce, regret that there was not time afforded to visit Westland. The mission of the party is mainly in connection with the coal-fields, and some days are to be spent about Reefton and Westport.. Mr Bruce telegraphed to the party regretting that a few days could not be set aside apart to visit the southern district where there is such a line pastoral field. Copie s /of “Beautiful Westland” have been posted to the members of the party at Westport, and the hope expressed that at some future time they might find it convenient to make the tour of Westland which is found so very enjoyable by all who have made it.
Mr Seddon M.P., is in receipt of the following letter from tiie Under-Seere-tary of Department of Internal Affairs, relative, to the invitation to General Bird wood to visit, Hokitika next week: “With reference to the representations which have been made by you regarding the possibility of General Birdwood visiting Hokitika, I am desired by General Birdwood to convey his thanks to the Returned Soldiers’ Association for the kind invitation extended to him, but have to express his,regret tjiat it is impossible for him to include Hokitika in the itinerary which has been arranged to connect with the boat leaving Picton on the afternoon of Saturday, 26th inst., and which involves constant day travelling in order.to include Greymouth. Westport. Nelson and Blenheim where receptions are being held in the evenings.”
