The weekly returns of infectious diseases notified to the Canterbury Health Office shows a total of 260 cases, as follows :—Westland, nil; Duller, varicella one; Innngahua, dinhtljcria two; influenza ..mild) seven; Grey', diphtheria two tuberculosis one, influenza (mild) ono; North Canterbury, scarlet fever two, diphtheria two, tuberculosis four, pneumonic sevfen, influenza (mild) 185 ; pneumonic 14, varicella two; Ash bur ten. scarlet fever put', influenza (mild) 19. erysipelas ope.- South Canterbury, searlet fever quo, diphtheria one, puerperal septicagftia pile, pneumonia one, influenza (mild) five. *

A commercial traveller from England who is at present visiting Taranaki, says that there is a likelihood of many printers, linotype operators, etc., being thrown out of employment shortly- in the Old .Country, The scarcity and the dearness of printing paper is preventing the publication of cheap hooks. Novels that were formerly published at 6s cannot now be published under los, and people will not pay that price for a book that can be read' in three or foulhours on a train journey. Some of the small publishers, the traveller stated, have retired from business, and others are likely to follow.
