A decision was delivered by the full High Court, in the caso of Maguire against the Union Steamship Coy cabled on August 29th. This was an appeal from the ruling by New South Wales Supremo Court, which upheld the • judgment in the Sydney District Court. , The Court allowed the appeal and directed that the order appealed from, be set aside. It reversed the District Court judgment and declared Maguire was entitled to compensation, in accordance with his earnings. - MELBOURNE GAS WORKERS. MELBOURNE, June 15. The Conference of the employers and strikers proved abortive . There will bo no stoppage of work by the sewerage employees, as their demands have been conceded. There has been a great rush on the lamp shops, though only a small proportion of the demand has been met. Prices of lighting material are rising rapidly. There are now fifteen thousand idle. , DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED. SYDNEY. Juno 15. The death sentence on the ex-police-man and soldier, Worrell, for the murder of his wife, as cabled on-26th May, has been commuted to imprisonment for life by the New South Wales Labor Government. s QUEENSLAND FLOODS. BRISBANE, June 'ls. Advices from Charlesvillg state that ns a result of floods in the Warrego district, all shearing has suffered. Railway and coach traffic has -stopped. » SYDNEY STOCK MARKET. SYDNEY, June 15. For many months the Homebu.sh stock market has been overcrowded with stock from the drought-stricken areas. Amongst other* offerings were many thousands of breeding owes and young wethers, which were sold at sacrificial prices. With the coining of raiil, however, the position has altered. There is a good demand for re-stocking purposes. This caused prices to vise, and lias depleted the market for mutton supply in a lesser degree the cattle market has been similarly affected.
MR WATTS’ RESIGNATION. SYDNEY, June 15. Mr Hughes states that Mr Watt’s resignation from the Federal Ministry was unjustifiable. . It has placed th,e Hughes Government in an embarrassing position, as it was impossible to send another Minister to London in time to replace’ him. Air Hughes charges Watt "with “abandoning Australia!” Air Hughes also rc-affinns his statment that the news of the resignation appeared in the press before he received it. THE MELBOURNE STRIKE. (Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. It is estimated that twenty thousand are idle through the strike, though there are only two thousand actual strikers. The decision of the employers to act unitedly has resulted in a hardening tendency minimising any gleam of a compromise. A strikers’ deputation to the Premier accused the latter of taking sides with the employers. Mr Lawson denied the impeachment insisting that lie only endeavoured to keep the public buildings going. Cabinet refused to intervene in the dispute’,, asserting the principle of deciding industrial disputes was at stake, therefore the matter should be determined by the Court.
