WESTLAND HOSPITALS AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
MONDAY, JUNE 14th,' 1920,
A special meeting of the Board was held at 7 p.m. Present—Messrs Wild (chairman), Cameron, Breeze, Morel, Evans, Davidson and Chestermaii. The Chairman reported verbally on the proceedings of the Conference of Charitable Air Boards recently held in Wellington. ' The item that interests our Board most became tho principal subject of the Conference, namely, Government subsidies. After a prolonged discussion a committee was set rip to report on the -proportional scheme as laid down by the Health Department. This Committee’s report was eventually adopted by the Conference, making a minimum of 12s 6d subsidy, and a maximum of 30s. The following questions were also discussed by the Conference Classification of Matrons and nurses; superannuation schemes for nurses; supplies foi institutions by Government department, maternity homes subsidy of £2 for £1 be asked; a proposal for loans to Board by the Government Department was lost and a scheme substituted, for the Department to borrow the sum that is required. The Chairman also reported an interview with Drs Valentine, Frengley and Killick, the Government architect, Mr Campbell, re the alterations necessary for new wing and administrative quarters at Westland Hospital ;also the addition of a steam laundry.—The Chairman’s report was received and adopted. Mr Davidson reported on his inspection of the steam laundry in Grevmouth, and moved that the Board adopt a similar principle, which was carried. Mr Davidson expressed his apprecia- | tion of thanks to Mr Fletcher (Secretary of the Greymoutli Board) for his courtesy in connection with his visit. The resignation of John Cameron, Esq., as a member of the Board was received and accepted with regret, all the members expressing their appreciation of his services. The resignation of District Nurse Bowie as received, but was referred back to her for further consideration, as.it was reported that arrangements regarding the renting and furnishing of a cottage had been arranged. The purchase of 10 acres of land adjoining Westland Hospital was agreed to. f It was resolved to reduce the cost of maintenance of Westland Hospital in the estimates for 1920-21 by £620. A resolution was carried inviting the
benevolent ladies of the district to meet and form a Benevolent Committee, the Board' assuring the financial assistance
necessary to carry out their functions. It tv as also decided to increase the monthly grant to 40/- to several Chinese recipients. The meeting then terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair.
