J FRIDAY, JUNE 11th. The Council mot at 7.50 p.m. Present—Messrs G. A. tPerry (Mayor), H. M. CouJson, G. H. Blank, G. A. Wood, H. A. Thompson, A. Parkhill, J. King, N. Warren and. F. McGregor. (' An apology ofr absence was received from Mr Breeze. The minutes were taken as read and confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. I From Hawera Borough Council forwarding resolution urging removal of duty on children’s footwear, and asking for support.—Received; Mr Coulson moved that the suggestion bo supported. Seconded by Mr King and carried. From • Public Trustee stating two sections in the estate of the late Hugh Gribben, were being abandoned.—Received.; no action taken. From Greymoutb Borough Council notifying receipts under Alcoholic ! Sales Control Act last year was £944. j —Received. > 1

From High School Hoard asking for appointment of representative to Board.—Received; Mr J. King was leap pointed representative. From T. W. Bruce asking for road access to property in. Sewell Street,—Received; request granted under usual conditions.

From Stratford Borough Council urging that Saturday afternoon he declared the universal half holiday and asking support of Council.—Received ; Mr Coulson moved that the Council moved that the Council suppdrt the proposal. Seconded by Mr Warren and carried.

From Prime Minister acknowledging receipt of Council’s resolution re payment of upkeep of hospitals from Consolidated Fund and promising due consideration.—Received. From Public Trustee Wellington acknowledging £B7 10s on account of abattoir loan. —Received. From 1). Little, in connection wun lease of a reserve.—Received; referred to the present holder of the area. From District Health Officer enclosing condemnation notice of premises in Revell Street and asking that they be demolished—Received; It was resolved to refer the matter to the State Advances Office, who hold a mortgage. From District Health Officer reporting on several properties and asking that notices be served on the owners asking for immediate attention.—Received ; receiving attention. From Messrs Wild and Bassett applying* for license, to store benzine up tv 5 tons.-—Received; referred to Fire Inspector Brjiddon for report, REPORTS, From Treasurer reporting receipts £B7 9s Gd-, payments 1183 10s 9d, dehit balance £lO9 14s 10d.—Received From Finance Committee recommending payment of accounts amounting to £542 10s 2d ; that the Committee had considered the question of a public works loan as brought up by Mr Coulson, and considerable discussion further consideration had been adjourned ponding a further import on the water supply. Mr Coulson (Chairman) said he would- move for the reception of the report, but in view of his motion for the proposed loan, he cynld pot move for the adoption of the report. He. did not consider that the fact that thq water supply required attention was sufficient to hold over the question of a public works loan, which he considered would not have been a burden on tho ratepayers,

Mi- McGye.gov asked if they could not take it as read. They had discussed thp matter fully in. Committee earlier jn thp week, The Mayor said he did not see what necessity there was to weary the Council again with the subject. Air Coulson said ho was in order and had the right to speak to the motion. He did not see why the ma (ter. should not he fully discussed in the Council if the: ffmnpeo Committee /the wholp Council) had previously come to <iv\ciSTOn thereon. The qiieslioji of the lqap had been referred to the Fill, aiifcp Committee previously to draw ip a list of proposed works and the amount and this he had done hut now it was proposed to shelve the question owing to the condition of the water supply. Air Coulson .continuing- raid the Borough Overseer lpu.l gone into the matter at considerably trouble, and ft was oydy fair- that the Council should give full consideration thereto. Air McGregor suggested that the Council vote at once on the motion. Air Blank asked Air Coulson of he was' finished as the room was too cold for him,

Mr Coulson said lie wished to olace before the Council the figures' that had been drawn up in coneiictioh with the proposal for the loan and then outlined the proposals' which the Finance Committee had negatived. He then moved the reception of ho Finance Committee’s report. Seconded by the Alayor and carried.

The Alayor moved that the report ha' adopted. Seconded by Air Blank ind carried an amendment b.v Mr Coulson, that a poll. of. the ratepayers be taken, on the proposed public works loan of £3,000, not getting a seconder,

From Manager of. Abattoirs (,i ; . Jarman) reporting for month of May there were examined, 8 cows. SO bullocks 212 sheep, 99. lambs, O pigs, 20, calves. Condemned ( bullock. Fees for period £O3 Us Od.—Received. Afr. Wood moved that the Council vote £25 to procure a supply of lew hooks for the Free Public Library.— Seconded by Air Coulson and carried.

Mr King asked what steps were being taken in conection with further report on the water supply that the Finance Committee had ordered. Ihe Alayor said the matter was receiving attention.

The Council then rose at 8.30 p.ip.
