The monthly meeting of the Westland County Council takes places on Tuesday next. 'I

It is expected that at the Hokitika Borough Council meeting to-night the question of a loan for water-works purposes will come up for decision. Om'the Prince of Wales birthday tee Overseas Club will hold a grand ynll at the Supreme Hall. Particulars in regard to the function appear in this issue. The ladies of the Overseas Ciub will control the supper arrangements. In connection with the Supreme Court session here next week, in "he case of Hall v. Cassidy and CJoy, Mr Hannan, for defendants applied for a change of venue to Greymouth. The application was opposed by Messrs Park and Murdoch solicitors, for the plaintiff and affidavits were filed accordingly. The motion was heard at Christchurch during the week and was refused. The hearing of the case will come on accordingly here in due course. A further case Wells v. ' Cassidy and Coy., for damages has. been set down for hearing here also. ,

At the Overseas Club last Tuesday night several ladies assembled to say good-bye to Mrs . A. H. Richards of Hampden Street, who is leaving shortly for Auckland, On behalf of the ladies present, Mrs W. J. Butler was deputed to present Mrs Richards with a gold brooch, and did so in very happy terms appreciating Mrs Richards good ' work in the community over a term of years. Mrs Richards made a happy response. The evening was enlivoied with music and competitions altogether a very pleasant time being passed.

Only one face is still being worked, hut every effort is being made by the manager, (Air Louis Morgan) to open up another face as soon as the labour is available. The Secretary of the Timber Workers’ Union, Mr F. Turley, received word last night‘that the Arbitration Court had given the following decision in connection with tho timber workers’ application for increased wages,:—An increase is granted at the rate of one penny per hour, or eight pence a day from January Ist last; and at the rate of two-pence half penny per hour or one shilling and eight-pence per day from May Ist last. The above rates are increases on the minimum rate, as scheduled in the Timber Workers’ agreement.

The daily bulletin issued by the Health Department showed an increase in the number of influenza cases in Canterbury and tho West Coast recorded on Tuesday from noon to the same hour on Wenesday, this being principally due to an outbreak in the Alt. Alagdala Home. The cases totalled 80, 79 being of the mild type, and one pneumonic. There were seven mild cases in Inaiigahua, one in Greymouth, 65 in North Canterbury, four in .Ashburton, and two in South Canterbury. There was one ease of pneumonic influenza in North Canter-* bury.

The death occurred yesterday at the Grey River Hospital of Mr Edward Thomas Gadd, one of the earliest pioneers of the Coast. The deceased gentleman had attained the age of 86 years, and had been an inmate of the hospital for the last twelve months. He was a native of Southampton, England, and'had resided in the Paroa district for the period of 51 years. He was engaged in mining pursuits at -Darkie’s Terrace for many years; and for W years was employed on the old horse tramway service conducted by Messis Kilgouc and l’erotti between Greymouth and” Kumara. Deceased’s wife . predeceased him several years ago.

A meeting of the Canterbury and West Coast Centre of the St John Ambulance Association was held at Christchurch on Wednesday night, Colonel F. B. Cresweil presiding. There were also present, Mesdames Whittakei, W atkias and Smith, Captain McKinney, and Messrs Thomas and Hoddinott. The financial statement showed a credit balance to current account of £337 19s Bd, Correspndence 'with Te Kinga was read in connexion with an appeal being made in that district to raise £IOOO for educa. tional purposes, and the appeal was approved. A letter was received from St John’s Gate, pointing out that students under course of instruction must attend not less than five lectures if desirous of being examined.

Otjra> correspondent of the ‘Press’ telegraphed on Wednesday evening as fololws : —“About twelve o’clock last nightthe cracking of timber gave tho miners working in the Otira Tunnel a warning that a. large' fall of rock was going to take place, and an admonition to ascape to a place of safety quickly. Shortly after, the timber gave way, and there followed the biggest fall of earth that has ever taken place in the Otira Tunnel. The fall is about four miles in from the Otira end. It is estimated that it will take three >r four weeks for the miners to clear the fall. This is most regrettable, as great headway was being made under the contract system.”
