COMMITTEE OF DEFENCE.

(Pe r Press Association.) WELLINGTON. June 9. Approval has been given for the setting up of a Committee of Defence to consider and report confidentially to the Minister of Defence on the problems of defence and important policy questions connected therewith. The Committee is constituted as follows:—President, Ma-jor-General Sir E..W. C. Chaytor, K.C.M.G., K.C.V.0.C.8., A.D.C.; members, Major-General Sir A. H. Russell, K.C.R., K.C.M.G., A.D.C. : Major-General S'ir A. W. Robin, K.C.M.G., CJ.B. ; Brig-adier-General G. S. Richardson, C. 8., C.M.G., 0.8. E., R.N.; Colonel J. J, Esson, C.M.G., Secretary, Lieut-Colonel RtTL Smytlie, D.S.O. This Colnmittee has power to add to its numbers, and to call experts to give evidence. Tile functions of tiio Committee are: (1) To consider questions and elaborate plans of defence from the point of view of the military forces, naval forces, air forces, and Imperial defence; (2) To advise the Minister regarding the allocation of' funds to be devoted to defence; (3) To obtain and collect .information from various departments of State ; (4) To prepare any documents required by him ; (5) To furnish such advice as might be given ; (6) To keep adequate records for the permanent information of the M inister.
