At the Supreme Court, before Judge Salniond, Eric Bertie Twindle, a young man, for forgery and uttering a cheque for £2O, was admitted to probation tor two years, accused to pay the costs of prosecution. William Ross, a young man, was charg ed with perjury in giving evidence in the Magistrate’s Court in a case wherein he was charged with being on licensed premises after hours. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Clarence Day, similarly charged was also found not guilty. A WAR MEMORIAL. ' WHAKATANE, June 10. A leading'Maori chief Hurunui Apr. - nui called a meeting of representatives of local bodies at the Maori Pa yesterday to propose a joint Mnori-Pakeha War Memorial. There was a large attendance, Hurunui’s proposal was unanimously adopted and a representative committee, was set up to decide Hrform of memorial,' which is to be' erected regardless of cast. The natives desired that .the memorial be erected at the sacred Pohnturoa rock, near the landing place of the original Maori ca noe in Whakatane town, and this was unanimously adopted. WHEAT REGULATIONS CHARGE DUNEDIN, June ](). In tlie Supreme Court before Justice Sim to-day A. Steven and Coy were sued by the Crown ior penalties for alleged breach of the Regulations in respect to the. sales of wheat. Mr W. C. McGregor K.G. appeared for the Crown and Mr Skerret K.C. and Mr A. S. Adams for defendants, A. Steven and Coy and William Josiah Love. The statement of claim set forth that Love is a. large shareholder and also managing director of the defendant company, personally controlling the company’s business and personally responsible for the wholesale buying and selling of grain.* The maximum price was fixed on 25th February -1918 by Order in Council for all wheat grain in New Zealand; such order remaining in force. The rate for fVee wheat, inferior in quality and good milling wheat, being Os 8d per bushel. After last October the defendants sold large quantities of such wheat at prices exceeding Gs 8(1,
the excess prices ranging ’from 7s 6d to 8s 6d. The alleged offences were the sale of 339 bushels at 7s 6d to Hutchison of Auckland; 167 to same firm at 8s; 336 to same at 8s 3d; 167 at 8s fid. To Roaches, Hastings, 345 at 8s 6d. To A. S. Paterson, Wellington; to same firm 333 at 8s 6d; to Birch and Coy. AVellington, 333 at 8s fid ; to Laery and Coy AVellington, same quantity at same price, and to Loan and Mercantile Cov. AVellington, 841 at 7s 3d and 798 at 7s fid. A penalty of £SOO is claimed in respect of each offence. Defendant’s statement admitted the sales, but mentioned that the prices included sacks. The easy is proceeding.
