U.S. PRESIDENCY
REPUBLICAN CONVENTION. 'By Electric Telegraph—Co ivrighO NEW YORK, June 8. The Republican National Convention for the selection of a presidential candidate has opened at Chicago. There are unique circumstances, in that it is said to be impossible to indicate who is likely to be chosen. Senator Johnson, Mr Lowden, and General Wood are probables.. • There is an absence of party “ bosses ’’ from the Convention, which is due to the desire of Republicans generally to place unrestricted power in the delegates’, hands to select their own nominees. The Convention is thus-free and its result is no foregone conclusion. It is thus apparently uncertain about the final selection. Senator Lodge is Chairman. He was loudly applauded when he criticised President Wilson for ever proceeding to th.e Peace Conference, because of his idea that he ps unable to trust anyone else. Senator Lodge denounced the Armenian mandate, and also the United States Government’s futile policy towards Mexico.
