The Prince of Wales concluded his " ' public engagements in Victoria on Satur day',after attending the races, inhere ; he backed several horses 1 , but failed to pick a winner. ' Ho later attended a special theatre performance. At both functions lie was recipient of enthusiasm tie demonstrations. Pending his departure to fill New South Wales engagements, be will spend a week in retirement. VISIT TO VICTORIAN MINES MELBOURNE, Jan 5. During a visit to Bendigo, donning overalls ,the Prince of Wales and staff, accompanied by Mr Hughes and the Victorian Minister of Mines, descended the United Mine. After chatting with the miners; the Prince procured a pick and cut out some gold specimens. He W managed to cut his hand while doing so. He took occasion during one of the ■ public functions to declare that be was not knocked out by the heavy duties undergone.
