In the House of Commons on May 20th, replying to ji retests against the return of the army to uniforms costing £3,000,000 over the first five years, Sir Archibald Williamson (Parliamentary and Financial Secretary to the War Office) said that the Government’s military advisers were of opinion that tlie change was necessary in order to keep up esprit de corps. Mr Charles Palmer (Ind.) Wasn't there enough esprit do corps in kliakif. (Cheers.) Wild scenes marked the ceremonies in the canonisation of John or Arc in Rome, says a London message of May 20th. • Nuns were lashed to the coping stones of columns by British soldiers, so that they might obtain a view of the proceedings. The French pilgrims are overcrowded to a remarkable degree. Eighty priests and 30 laymen occupy one.dormitory in the Lconiano College, which building also accommodates 350 women. Hundreds of people ascend the Holy Steps daily, kissing the Saviour’s bloodstains. Among the pilgrims are 140 descendants of the famiiy of Joan of Arc, including one named O’Brien and two d’Ares, who are direct descend, ants of tlie maid’s brothers.
