BOOKMAKING SWINDLES. (Deceived this day at 8 a.m.)

LONDON, June 2,

The “ Daily Chronicle’s ” Paris correspondent reports a turf scandal has been revealed at Saint Cloud as the result of a jockey, accused of pulling the favourite, admitting he was guilty, and pleading that other jockeys also received bribes from bookmakers. Investigation showed that although bookmaking is illegal, four hundred thousand sterling is being placed with bookmakers every day. Bookmakers have an army of touts in cafes and restaurants. Certain jockeys have been participating in bookmakers’ profits, after pulling heavilybacked horses. It is now proposed to open totalisator offices in Paris, and to impose heavy increases in the penalties against bookmakers, in order to stop bookmaking.
