SENTENCED FOR THEFT. INVERCARGILL, June 2. After the trial of William Joseph Lyons, William Holland, and William Edward Dtithie, on various charges

arising out of the theft of a large quantity of petrol from a bulk store occupied

by 'J. G. Ward and Co., and Briscoe and Co., had proceeded throughout the forenoon at the Supreme Court, counsel for tho accused withdrew his plea of not guilty and they pleaded guilty, Duthie and Lyons to the theft and Holland to ■breaking and entering. Mr Justice Sim sentenced each of the accused to reformative detention fo*r a period not exceeding three years.

NON-POLITICAL CONTROL; WELLINGTON, This Day

Hon W. F. Massey states a Bill is being prepared for submission to Parliament, wl<ich is intended to strengthen non-political control of the public service. At the same time, he maintains the Government should be consulted regarding appointments to administrative divisions of the public service, which is practically restricted to heads of departments. During the war, the Public Trust' and Post Office were removed from control of the Public Service Commissioner.- Tl*e reasons for this change being no longer existent, there is a possibility of these two departments being again brought under non-political control.
