TRANSPORTERS AND JOCKEYS WELLINGTON, June

The Advisory Board of tin* Transport Workers’ Federation lias given further consideration to the jockeys’ dispute and has decided not to withdraw its recommendation that racing be regarded as “black” until the Jockeys’ Vs-, sociation is recognised by the Racing Conference. Notice to this effect has been sent to the Committee set up by the Labour Unions to handle the dispute.

The Advisory Board considers the position lias not changed at all by the Conference between the the President of the Racing Conference and certain jockeys on Saturday. These jockeys did pot represent the Association, though the claims they submitted for discussion had been made already by the Association. The Advisory Board contends that the organised- jockeys have a right ,to be recognised. HOSPITAL BOARDS’ CONFERENCE WELLINGTON, June 1. The Hospital Boards’' Conference met to-day. There were opening addresses by Mr Parr (Minister of Public Health) and Dr Vnlintine (Director-General of Hospitals). A remit was adopted advocating a new. provision in .the Act to meet the expenses of ehairfiien of Hospital Boards incurred for cars in visiting various institutions under control of Boards, i It was agreed that a provision should he made for the payment of honorariums to chairmen. The conference suggested £IOO honorarium. Ft was also decided that a uniform flat rate payment of £1 Is per meeting should be paid.to members as travelling expenses, irrespective of distance in each case. A system of levies and subsidies was discussed at considerable length. Many remits were submitted on the subject. The present system of levying on land values was held to be inequitable. A fiat rate was discussed, as also a proportion scheme proposed by tlie Department and outlined in the “ Journal of Public Health ” for April. Tlie matter was referred to a committee to confer with the Departmental officers and report to the conference. GOVERNMENT APPOINTMENTS. WELLINGTON, June 1.

Mi' C. J. Roakes, head of the Agricultural Department, lias been appointed the first Commissioner to represent New Zealand in the administration of the Nauru phosphate production and supply. He will take charge of the business during the initial stages only. Colonel Hunter, who had charge of the dental services of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, has been appointed director of tile Dental Department being' established for giving free dental examination and treatment to school children. The appointment of Colonel Hunter was first made some time ago, but as complaints were made by other members of the profession about the position being given to him without competition being invited, lie resigned. He has now been re-appointed.

HOTEL REQUIREMENTS. BLENHEIM, June

The Wairau Incensing Committee today passed a resolution that the Minister be asked to have Section .'6 if the Licensing Act amended by omitting the words “six rooms” and substituting the words “number of robins necessary for the accommodation of the travelling public, having regard to the requirements of the district, such number to bo specified by the Licensing Committee for the District.” It was also decided to urge that Licensing Committees should be given the power to supervise leases given the licensees of hotels, in order that they might see that the rentals paying and the conditions imposed were fair and reasonable. / . *_ ■
