CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The usual monthly meeting of the Committee wub held at the CountyChambers last evening, the Chairman (Mr G. A. Perry) presiding over a small attendance of members.
The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.
IN WARD CORRESPONDENCE. From District Traffic Manager, Greymouth promising to visit Hokitika to confer with the Chamber in connection witli the erection of a sheep stop at Hokitika and other matters. —Received. The Secretary reported that so far tho visit had not eventuated. From Chief Postmaster, Hokitika, in reference to tenders for Otira to Hokitika, motor mail seryipc.—Received. The action of the Executive in approving lof the acceptance of tenders, was endorsed, the service'now being in regular operaton from Otira. From S. W. Richardson, Matainui, expressing regret at inability of Minister of Public Works to extend liis visit below Mari Hari and stating that the petitions in course of circulation for signature urging extension of the railway below Ross, would be forwarded later,— Received.
From Mr Climie, Canterbury Welfare League in connection with agitation for having ’ the Arthur’s Pass train heated more adequately.—Received; to be sup., ported, it being stated that footwarmers were put into the carriages in the morn ing at Christchurch and were not again touched till arrival back at Christchurch in the evening.
From same, advising that the Executive of the Canterury League welcoming the proposal for the inclusion of the Westland district in the League, and giving particulars of action being taken to ensure the inclusion of Westland.— Received. After discussion it was resolved to leave the question untii the alteration of the constitution of the Canterbury Chamber had been effected. A paper on “Grass” by Mr W. J. Butler was read and received, and ordered to be published, a hearty vote of thanks being passed to the writer for same. . It was resolved to submit to tfie Government in view of the world shortage of news printing paper, the possibilities of the dis rict in this respect and to' invite an investigation and report thereon. The Chairman rose at 9 ’p.m.
