Mr Wi'l'i llll Fortescue, of Pieton, celebrated his jOJlrd birthday on Monday last. Me was the recipient of inanv felicitations on the record achieved, and upon being in such an excellent condition of health. Mr Fortescue arrived in New Zealand in 1840, lauding at Petope, where he acted as storekeeper for the New Zealand Land Company. Later on he went tp Marlborough, arriving after the Waijiiu massacre- He joined the throng. at Gabriel’s Gully at the time of the rush, apd followed the golden vein, particularly at Mahakipawa, until recent years, Upon being presented iu H,R,H. the Prince .if Wales at Pieton recently, the lively old mail remarked: “Yes, I remember your father, your grandfather, and your great grandfather too; and I also lived in the reign of 'Cjeprp III.” Mrs AY, Clarke of Ross Wilt) him teen in ill health for some time past, died somewhat suddenly about noon to-day. Mrs Clarke had been in bed only since Saturday, She got up this morning to attend to her household duties, but about ten o’clock collapsed and died a couple of hours later. Mrs Clarke was very well known in the district having been resident of Ross for very many years. Her husband Mr Clarke is an employee of the Ross lime works. She also leaves two sons (John and William) the former residing at Greymouth and the latter at Ross, and two daughters (Mrs Mdßherson of Greymouth and Mrs Guiiuops tjf/Hokitika). Mrs. McCrimmin of Newcastle, New South AValos, Mrs AV. Winchester of Greymouth, and Miss N. .loops of Hokitika ai>,i gisfers of flip deceased.
