DR JAMESON.
It is fitting that at last the remains of Sir Ee under Starr Jameson, once known best as an audacious adventuier for Empire, should uo laid to rest in the granite hills with those of his chief, Cecil ‘Rhodes. Even a bald catabgu© of Jamosou’s work for tho territory of Rhodesia alone would, make a volume, crowded with interesting adventures and achievements. Ho himself looked on Rhodes and described him as the “master mind,” but it was Jameson, who supported the far vision of his chief with amazing energy and tenacity of purpose, and a splendid ludaeity from 1888 to 1896. Jameson’s life was an Odyssey of adventure and achievement which led to, but did not end, in disaster, for after the humiliation and disgrace an unconquerable spirit rose above all difficulties and won historic success in the spheres of polities and constructive administration. From 1891 to 1895 he was Administrator of Rhodesia, and in December, 1895, led the raid on the Transvaal. Three days later he fought a .battle at Krugersdorp and on the same day surrendered to the Boers. Eater he was tried in London and sentenced to 10 months imprisonment. Incarceration undermined his health and he was released. In 18991900 he served in South * Africa, and subsequently, following hostilities, was elected a member of tile Cape Legislative Assembly. Four years later and for four years he was Premier of Cape Colony. During those eventful years he labored to make amends for the past and overcame obloquy and opposition. His crowning service was his great part in bringing about the South African Union. And now “after life’s fitful fever lie sleeps weU,” with the grinf Matoppos guarding the graves of two great builders of Empire.
