| 21 MILLION SURPLUS. ; WELLINGTON, May 27. It is undestopd the March quarter’s Dominion finance figures, taken in conjunction with the figures for the previous quarters, will disclose a surplus approximately two and a half million. PESTS IN FIJI MAIZE. TAURANGA, May 25. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting last night the question was raised of the serious menace to maize-growing j in the Dominion from pests in maize , imported from Fiji. A small sample j was exhibited hero, full of weevil and moth, known as angumois moth, j which the inspector declares will prove : more deadly than firoblight in fruit trees. The position is understood to be that the inspector has no power to condemn; consequently cargoes are ar-
riving, .and pests are being spread broadcast. The chamber passed a motion drawing the attention of the Government to the menace, and demanding immediate action.
A BANKRUPT CHARGED. \ CHRISTCHURCH, May 27. '• At the Magistrate’s Court this morningt William ‘Shaw, trading as the North Shaw Rubber Company, was charged with breaches of the Bankruptcy Act, in that (1) having been adjudged a bankrupt, lie bad within three years before the commencement of such bankruptcy, made payments out of the regular course of his. business, not being for the ordinary expenses of himself or his family; (2), that, having been adjudged a bankrupt, lie had by unjustifiable extravagance brought abo.ut such bankruptcy. Shaw, who pleaded “ not guilty,” reserved his defence, and was committed for trial, bail being allowed in one surctv of £IOO.

At the Supreme Court, William Leonard Ellis, a steward on the Corinthie was found guilty of receiving stolen property and sentenced to three years’ reformative treatment. ALICE PARKINSON PETITION. WESTPORT. May 28. Mr H. Holland M.P., lias forwarded to Hon. Lee. Minister of Justice, a petition signed by eleven juryman asking for the release of Alice Parkinson. The Jurors were the ones who were at the trial of the accused, when it will be remembered the jurors brought in a strong recommendation for mercy.

It is anticipated that the work, of issuing the British war medal to those who served in the war will bo commenced within the next three months, and that the Allied Victory Medal will be available for distribution by the efid of the year, Approximately 100,CHI0 "New Zealanders are eligible for both these medals, but the task of engraving and issuing them will involve an immense amount of administrative work, for the personal file of each man has to be scrutinised carefully by Base. Records in order that the necessary data may be obtained. No decision has yet been arrived at in connexion with clasps, but it is understood that there are to be seven clasps for the Western Front, and three clasps for the other theatres of war.
A.S.R.S. TRIBUNAL, UNANIAIOUS DECISION REACHEDWELLINGTON, May 28. The A.S.R.S. Tribunal has concluded its sitting. An unanimous decision lias been reported to Government. The agreement has yet to .be confirmed by both sides, but it is not expected there will be trouble in this direction. The terms cannot lie published till other sections of the railway dispute arc dealt with.
