At an early hour yesterday morning an old man named Neale McConegby was found burnt to death in his hut a few miles from Crushington, near Reef, ton. It. seems that during the night bis but caught fire and the old man was overpowered by the smoke. McConerrliv was about ninety years of age.

Questioned regarding the market shortage of.*trucks and the step sthat the department was taking to overcome it, the Minister of Railways, Mr Massey, stated that importation would ho necessary. The annual report of the Committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club states that the year’s operations were the most successful in the history of the club. As the balance-sheet will show, the increase in stakes amounted to £1,430 as compared with the season 1916-17, when' the last full meetings were held. The loss by fire of the grand stand during the year was a most regrettable incident, and a- very large sum will lie required to rebuild. The rebuilding of the stand, has been postponed, owing to tile Government s refusal to authorise its reconstruction. 'l’he delay in installing the new Julius totalisator was due to labour trouble in Australia, but the machine is now arriving, and the work of building the now house will be started immediatelv.
