Mr Thomas West, organising' secretary and lecturer of St John’s Ambulance Association loft this morning foi South Westland for the purpose of giving a series of special ambulance lectures in ail centr’es of the district. Mr West expects to remain in the South district about a fortnight.
The many friends of Mr Alexander Barltrop, of Greymouth will regret, to hear of his death which occurred on Monday night. The deceased who was a native of Nelson Was 43 years of age, and had resided in Greymouth for 20 years. He was a blacksmith, and for 17 years was in the employ of Mr G. Cot- : tie. He had been ailing for a period of six weeks. He was a member of the Oddfellows’ Lodge, and took a prominent interest in boating. While resident in Nelson he was a member of the Nclsqn Band. He tonic a great interest in the work of tlie Presbyterian Churcli of which ho was a devout 'member. He leaves a widow and a family or two sons one eighteen years of age, and the other 13 years. The deceased was a most estimable citizen and his passing will he deplored by a great circle of friends.

At the Magistrates Court Greymouth yesterday a waterside worker named George Mayo, was charged with the theft of two tins of paint, value 6s, from the s.s. Alexander the previous evening. The accused pleaded guilty. Asked whether lie had any explanation to make the accused said that he had

Mr S. E. Clements, who has the motor mail contract,' is now running three times a week from Hokitika to Otira railway station, and vice versa. This does away with the necessity of hoardinir the train at Jacksons, as was the case in the previous service.
Commenting on the influenza position on Monday, the District Health Officer (Dr. Telford) said that matters were more or less stationary. During, the 49 hours ended at rioon yesterday, there were 44 notifications in North and South Canterbury and Westland, made up as follows :—Cliri.-itsehureli, 26 mild; Rangiora, 4 mild; Lyttelton, 1 pneumonic; Sumner 3 mild; Geraldine, 1 mild; Timnru, 1 pneumonic; Ashburton, Hampstead, Otira and Westport, eacli 1 mild; lieOfton and Greymouth, each 2 mild. The bi-weekly influenza bulletin for the same districts issued at noon yesterday showed 106 notifications including 74 mild and 5 pneumonic in North Canterbury, of which .'32 mild and 2 pneumonic cases were in Christchurch. There were 2 pneumonic cases, at Lyttelton, 1 at Sumner, and 1 at Otira, all the notifications being cases of a mild type.
