11.M.5. ZEALANDIA SCRAPPED.

H.M.S. ZEALANDIA SCRAPPED. LONDON, April 8. The Admiralty announce that H.M.S. Zealandia is to be scrapped and sold as being out of date, Orginally, this vessel was named the New Zealand, apd she carried trophies and monetary gifts contributed by people in the Dominion —more especially from residents in Timaru and Christchurch—and there was the carved bell, the present from the Maoris. All the 5 trophies and funds (after the official audit) were transferred to H.M.S New Zealand, and they were on board the newer vessel at the time of Admiral Lord Jellicoe’s official visit to the Dominion.

The funds subseribjed to provide prizes and awards to the crew ol the Zealandia were naturally not drawn on during tlio course of the war, and the accumulated interest will make provision for handsome awards from now onward, to the personnel of the New Zealand. H.M.S. Zealandia was one ot the King Edward VII type, and the only warship of this class now in commission is H.M.S. Commonwealth, which is stationed at Invergorden as gunnery training ship, under the orders of the Commander-in-Chief, Scotland. The battleships, Africa, Hindustan, Hibernia and Dominion, (all King Edward Vll’s) have also been placed on the saltlist.
