“LAST CARD LEWIE”
£70,000 WINNINGS ,AT POKER
NEW YORK, March 22
’ The gambling fraternity of New York’s “White Light” district is much concerned in the influx from some un-
known source of quantities of “marked cards.” Complaints have been reaching the authorities for weeks about the appearance of cards, the value of which is readily apparent from the back to a player familiar with them. Tho latest sensation came to light yesterday by the surrender of Louis Krohnbcrg, a wealthy manufacturer, on a charge of obtaining money by cheating at a game of chance. Krohnbcrg s accusers, his former, friends, were accustomed to participate in poker games at his home, where their host invariably supplied the cards. They allege that the total losses to Krohnbcrg are £70,000. . , . This is the second time Krohnbeig has been involved in siipilar circumstances. It was said that lie had been forcibly evicted from a poker party on New Year’s night at the home of Mr Joseph Schenck, the husband of Miss Norma Talniadge, the famous film stai after Mr i Sclienek had exposed him. In the latest ease the evidence of Krohnberg’ former associates tells how he was given the name of ‘-Last Card Lewis” as the result of his- uncanny luck in last-card draws. In' one instance, it is stated tile j ac k-pot had £3,000 in it, but Krohnberg, with a pair of threes, refused to divide the pot knowing that a pair of aces was held against' him, and insisted on drawing the last card. He drew another four, making two pairs against his opponent’s pair of aces. In an affidavit on e of the players mys that he took the cards to an expert, who discovered they were marked.
