OTTAWA, May 17. Political and journalistic circles strongly urge the appointment of Sir_ F. Borden as first Canadian representative at Washington. Borden is anxious to retire from active politics. He is said by the papers to be singularly well, equipped by a knowledge of American conditions and of Imperial affairs for the .position. SUDDEN DEATH. ' WAIHI, May 18. William Cunliffe, an elderly man. employed as a watchman by the AVaihi. Gphl Mining Company, died rather suddenly at the hospital iust after S o’clock on Friday night. The deceased went to work as usual on Friday afternoon. when lie complained of feeling unwell and shortly afterwards lapsed into a state of semi-consciousness. He was taken to the hospital, where lie died as stated, without having regained consciousness. Death was due to kidney trouble.
