Mr Watt bad a lengthy interview with Hon Aniery and the Colonial Office officials. He takes up the financial portion of his mission in the city this week. ’ i _
HIGH FOOD PRICES. (Received this day at 11.30 a.m.) , LONDON, April 17. Tlie “Labour- Gazette” states retail prices, including food, clothing, fuel light and rent on Ist May were about 141 per cent, above the figures rulin'-: in July 1914. The Food Controller’s statistics relating to food show an increase of 146 per cent. He says United Kingdom’s food prices have,', risen less than France, Italy and Sweden a? are not much in excess of United States, and adds that the present level is undoubtedly a matter of serious concern. The Food Controller concludes that prices for the coming summer will reach a very high level, owing to toe cost of importable food, tlie partial removal of the bread subsidy and increased price of sugar and potatoes.

The Legislative Council of Rhodesia passed a resolution by 12 to 5 requesting the Imperial Government to establish a responsible Government in Rhodesia. The Postmaster-General voted with the elected members who are in a majority. Tho minority is composed of nominated members. \ v„. FRENCH RAILWAYS. (Received This Dav at 1.5. p.rii.) . PARTS, May 18. A Government Bill introduced inthe Chamber of Deputies proposes 1 administrative unification of ail French railways. It is planned that control shall he exercised by a super directorate of Government workers, and owners combined with'a common dividend and sinking fund to make up common losses and uniform rates on a basis of profit and loss on all lines.
