, r AUSTRALIAN 05 N.z. CABLE ASSOCIATION] eastern TRADE. SYDNEY, May 18. At tho annual meeting of the firm of Biirlis Philip and 00., the Chairman stated that the. Company was preparing to meet the development of Die Eastern trade and its increased requirements under the new Pacific Ocean conditions. Their proposals included direct services between the larger Island groups. It was intended, lie said, in order to overcome disabilities and in order to compete with foreign competi-. tors, to form a separate Burns Philip Island Company. , The new concern would have ’ts headquarters at Fiji, where the interIsland service would centre. Everything possible was being done to maintain Australian and British interests against keen outside competition. Tho Chairman explained that the new Burns Philp South Sea Coy, had paid, the parent Company half a million In scrip and the shareholders of the parent. Company were being offered contributing shares in the new company at par, equal to one share in the new, company for every five shares held in the parent company. A feature of the Burns Philp Co.'s merchandise transactions is'that there is a big increase in its Now Zealand section.
MEN FOR CHURCH. SYDNEY, May 18. Both the Presbyterian and Methodist .General Assemblies are now confronted with a serious shortage in lumber of men who are offering for the ministry. ,One of the chief causes, it is said, is the war. The war, besides drawing some students .to the front, has interfered with the .training of others. As regards the Presbyterian> Church, it has now been stated at the Assembly that the war has broken the churchgoing, ’ habit of many Presbyterian young men. It also was stated that the mental and physical strain of the war wears has been causing exhaustion among young men, and .consequently a loss in ministerial candidates. The Presbyterian Assembly hopes the lost ground may soon be recovered. The Methodist Conference decided to meet its shortage by • importing clergy from England. They are importing 3-5. ex-service theological students who axe not married.
As regards a religious immigration bureau to promote Methodist immigration, it was decided to seek' co-opera-tion of other churches in the scheme including a possible arrangement with the New Zealand Methodist Confercn-e
