POSITION IN WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, May 17

Owing to the spread of influenza in the form of heavy colds, followed by severe bronchial attacks, children 'un/ier fifteen are prohibited from attending the picture theatres. The returns of infectious diseases notified from various parts of the Wellington Public Health District for the week ended noon to-day, sho>ved an» increase of 525 in the mini ber of cases of influenza compared with the figures for the previous week. /Altogether 798 influenza- notifications were received during the week 'by the District Health Office, of which 20. related to pneumonic cases three to severe and 775 to -inn cases. The city figures were seven pneu monic, two severe, 325 mild. ■ The District Health Officer Dr I. 111. Fans) stated that so far as Wellington City was concerned, the position was reassuring, in that the ratio of pneumonic to mild cases was not* increasing unduly. “It is anticipated,” said Dr Faris, “that there will be several waves of this mile! type of influenza during the winter months, as many of the' cases reported are the same as those experienced five years or so ago, when the disease was not so dreaded as it is to-day.

SCHOOLS CLOSED. 1 ! PALMERSTON N., May 17. All the primary schools in ' Palmerston North have now closed on account of sickness. Influenza- has spread rapidly amongst the children, but principally in a mild form. Mumps and measles are also prevalent.

SOUTHLAND NOTIFICATIONS. INVERCARGILL, May .17. During the week ended Sunday, 92 eases of influenza were notified in the Southland Health District, against 44 for the previous week. The cases are mostly mild.
