TURKISH SENSATION
CONSTANTINOPLE, May 16,
Details of the Peace Treaty caused a sensation amongst Turks, who received them with mingled indignation and depression. Tewfik Pasha, President of the peace delegation wired the Grand Vizier to the effect that the Treaty was absolutely incompatible df the independence and aspirations of Government. The Turkish press, comments similarly. It is pointed out inter alia, that the loss of Smyrna will injure Turkey without advantage to the Greeks, while the Chatalun. frontier will provoke endless racial hostility. Government will resign if' modifications are not obtained. Whether the Sultan will find a' 'Ministry. is doubtful. Nationalists, if reinstated will prove more . unyielding unless convinced that the Allies are ready to use force freely. SPA, CONFERENCE POSTPONED. LONDON', May 15. Hon Lloyd George and M. Millerand to-day agreed to' the postponement of Spa Conference till after the German general elections. The date of 21st June was previously suggested. It was agreed that the Versailles Treaty be maintained in full force, particularly the disarmament clauses, whose enforcement should not be postponed untn after the Spa meeting. In other words, •'the question of disarmament will not be discussed at Spa.. As regards reparations, M. Miller and provisionally assented to the fixing of definite sums subject to certain conditions, one of which is that France shall receive payment on account from Germans. Financial experts will he consulted later.
