DUNEDIN, May 14

With a view to installin an Automatic Telephone Exchange in Dunedin, the Telegraph Deprtnient has purchased a full quarter-acre of land in Dowling street, opposite the Commercial Travellers’ Club. The intention is to immediately erect a new telephone exchange, which will be- wholly automatic and will be completed in a year, and >t is expected that Dunedin will have the full automatic system in operation within two and a half years. Mr E. A. .Shrimpton, the new Tele-cu-iiph Superintendent, leaves for London shortly, and part of his business will be to make final arrangements for tl.e purchase of submarine cable and apparatus to connect the North and South Islands by telephone. It will thus be possible lor the, South Island centres to communicate with Wellington or Auckland bv telephone, or vice versa. Mr Shrimpton explained that this work is a large and costly one. The cables will weigh some fifteen tons ner nan-, tieal mile, and the cost will not bo less than one thousand pounds a mile. The total capital cost, including apparatus and. cost of laying will easily absorb the best part of .£IOO,OOO.

WANGANUI MAYOR CHARGED \ MAN SHOT IN THE BREAST. WANGANUI, May 16. A mysterious affair occurred on Saturday afternoon. A young man named Darcy Cressweli, aged 24, who belongs to Timaru and who arrived in Wanganui on a visit a few days ago, was conversing for some time with C. E. Mnckay, solicitor, at the latter’s office. Subsequently a chair was thrown through a window and shots were heard. Cressweli was taken to the hospital with a lmllet in his chest. Mackav, was later on, brought before the Justices and remanded till Monday, on a charge of attempted murder. Cressweli is making satisfactory pr»gress. Mackay had entertained Cresswell and a friend at dinner at a locai hotel on Tuesday evening. As the accused is Mayor of the town the incident has caused a sensation.

STOLEN SHEEP. STATION MANAGE! FOUND GUILTY. DUNEDIN, May 13. At tile iSupremo Court, Adam Murdoch McDonald, manager of the Ornn„lad« near Roxburgh, was charged with the. theft of some thirt.,slieep from a neighbouring sheep owner. The evidence went to show that the earmarks of sheep straying on Ormaglade station had ‘been tampered with.

The jury retired at o p.m., and ,e----turned at 10.40 p.m. with a verdict U guilty, with a very strong recommendation to riiercy on account of the laxity of the manner in which the ear-mark-ing of sheep in the district generally had been carried out in the past; also on account of the non-observance of the regulations required by law as to notifying neighbouring sheep owners of mustorings; and also on account of the age and character of ‘the accused in the past-.

Mr Justice Sim said that in view of the circumstances and the jury’s recommendation he would he justified in imposing a pecuniary penalty. Accused would be fined £125, which would be sufficient to cover expenses of the prosecution.
