- POLICE MURDERED. •LONDON, May 11
The shooting of the policemen at Lower road’ (Cork) was executed wit a great daring. The men ‘were proceedng to night duty, and' waited awhile >n the pavement about 11 o’clock fur i tramcar . ‘ The instant the car stopped a deadly volley was fired.- Sergeant -Garvey ind Constable Harrington, on boarding the "car, dropped dead. A thirdconstable was wouiujed and managed .to reach the barracks after being again 1 wounded. The volleys caused a panic amongst the passengers and smashed the cap windows. Tiie conductor and one passenger had the narrowest escape from the bullets. The assailants “fired from a few feet distant. Some were ostensibly waiting for the car.
REPRESSIVE MEASURES. LONDON, May 13. It is evident Sir N. McCready (the new. police 'head in Ireland) is bent upon new repressive methods against the Sinn.Feinners. It is now reported ' in Dublin that McCready’s new plans are based on the late Lord Kltchner’s methods of dealing with guerilla tactics in the Boer- War. McCready’s plans include a network of blockhouses all over Ireland, to be manned by the troops, and to be equipped with machine guns. The report is not yet confirmed, but'it is has arisen through .the announcement that tlio police will be afforded further military protection, and tliat on a wide scale. i McCready has, in fact, announced that the English Cabinet have agreed to send a largely increased garrison to Ireland.
AN OFFICIAL DENIAL. LONDON, May 15. The “ Evening News ” says that an official denial has been given to a,sensational report from Dublin that Sir : Neville McCdeady’s plans include the establishment of 100 blockhouses, strongly garrisoned, implying that a virtual ye-conquest of Ireland is intended. The Government, however, has decided to greatly increase military *i> tivities in the outlying districts where Sinn Feiners are usurping the local authority. •
LIST OF BUILDINGS DESTROYED. LONDON, May 14. ' A Dublin Castle Bulletin states that fifty Irish police barracks were destroyed on the night of May 12th; ov-sr twenty income tax offices were attacked and hooks and documents seized, and several courthouses were also attacked. Eighteen further police barracks and five income tax offices have been destroyed by fire on May 14th, explosives being used. The Maynooth Town Hall was amongst those destroyed on May 14th.
