The Very Rev. Dean Tubnifm, who has been on a visit to Timaru, arrived in Greymouth by last night’s express, and came on to Hokitika to-day.. On June 2nd the Dean leaves for Wellington, en route for Europe on a holiday tour. Mr P. Hickey, formerly a well-known figure in tho Labour movement in New Zealand, is at present on a visit to Wellington. It is stated that he intends to again take up his permanent residence in tho Dominion. Now that a commencement has been made with street tree-planting, it is to bo hoped it will become general. ,An avenue of ash trees for Hampden Street lias been suggested also. It is probable that a committee will be set up, and with permission of the Borough Council will take the work in hand. Arbor Day has been suggested as a suitable time to launch the scheme, but no doubt tho I preliminary .will be laid in advance. A rather unique case was heard in. the Wanganui Court last week, a mother being charged with failing to send a child to school. The defendant stated that she had seventeen children, fifteen of whom were attending school. Tho magistrate said that he would extend the greatest clemency to the mother, who must have a very heavy burden imposed upon her with such a family. She would be lined 2s, and a month would ho given to pay. From to-day the second bi-weekly mail to Hari Hari will be continued as here-to-fore going on from Ross on Saturday, and being available lor V at Hari Hari on Saturday nights. This will meet the request of the settlers which was conveyed to the Chief Postmaster yesterday by' Mr Bruce, (County Chairman) and Mr W. Searle of Herepo on behalf of the Hari Hari residents. Mr Stuart, Chief Postmaster, lost no time in pitting the change to .the 'authorities and securing a favour- : able reply.
A special meeting of the Westland Oounty Council will be held on Tuesday next in connection with the visit of the Minister of Public Works. Hon Coates will be met at Otira on Monday anc brought as far aslvumara that evening. On Tuesday the members of the Council will meet.the Minister at Arahurn where he will be entertained' at lunch and taken up the Valley. Deputations wil be taken at Hokitika on Tuesday night. This may legitimately be taken as indicating a desire on the part of our Royal guest that his first visit shall not bo his last. New Zealanders will hope that before many years have'passed they may have the pleasure of entertaining next time both a Prince and a Princess of Wales.
The function of planting the second elm in Stafford Street was performed by Mrs It. J. Scddon yesterday afternoon in the presence of the Mayor (Mr Perry), the County Chairman (Mr Bruce), the Chairman of the Harbor Board (Mr Wild), and other representative citizens. The ground was prepared by Mr Keys, and Mrs Seddon amid applause, carried out her Unties very faithfully. At the call of Mr P. E Stewart three cheers were given for Mrs Seddon who dedicated the tree to the memory cf her son Captain R. J. Seddon killed in the war. Subsequently the Revd Fraser an ( ] Mrs Fraser entertained Mrs Seddon and personal friends at afternoon teg at the Presbyterian Manse.
