SPECIAL MEETING

NOTICES OE MOTION

A special nfoetiug of the Council was held at 3 p.m. Present: Messrs T. W. Bruce (Chairman), T. W. Duff, S. G. Ferguson, J. A. Murdoch, IS. A. Wells, T. E.' Chesteriuan, B. Ward, L. H Morel, anti Hon J. Grimmond The Chairman under notice of motion moved:-—"That the special order made by the'Westland County Council by a resolution passed,at a special meeting on Hist day of July, 1007, and confirmed at a subsequent meeting thereof on 11th day of September, 1007, fixing the names and boundaries and representation of the Bilimans, Stafford, Arab ura,. Kanieri, Kokatahi, llimu, Totara, Okarito, and Okuru Hidings of the County of Westland be, and the same is, hereby rescinded and that in lieu thereof the number of ridings in the said County bo decreased and altered to three: that the names of same to be as follows: Northern, Central'and Southern. That three members shall represent each said new Hiding; and that the boundaries thereof be as set odl in the description hereunder and that this resolution on its confirmation in accordance with “The Counties Act, 11)08" and its amendments, as a special order shall come into elfect for the purpose of the preparation and adjustment of valuation rolls on Ist April 1921, and lor other purposes .shall not come into force [ and elfect until the expiration of the present term of office of the Councillors. NORTHERN BIDING.

Commencing at midstream at the mo utli of the Teramakau River, thence in a S.E. and E. direction along midstream of the said river to the dividing, range between Canterbury and Westlaud, thence S.W. along the said dividing range to the source of the Arahura River;'thence N.W., and N.W. along midstream of the said Arahura River to Caledonian Creek; thence S. and W. along midstream of the said Caledonian Creek to Douglitown; thence N. \V. and W. bounded by ReserveT4s thence N.W passing Mt. McKay to McKean’s water •race; thence N.W. along the said water race to the junction of Hau Hau and Brennan’s Creek at Cement Lead Track ; thence S.W. along the said Cement Lead Track to the Hau Hau road; thence W. along the said Plan Hau road to the Hokitika Borough Boundary E.; thence N.E. and N.W. along the said Hokitika Borough Boundary to the (Rean Beaeli; thence'along flic said Ocean Beach N.E. to tlic commencing point, (the Borough of Kumara is excluded herefrom). CENTRAL RIDING.

Commencing at the Ocean Beach at the S.W. corner of Endowment Reserve No. 271 thence along and bounded by the Southern part of the said Reserve 271; and thence S.E. along the Northern shores of Lake Maliinapua and thence S.E. along and bounded by the H.O. line to the Hokitika River; thence along the midstream of the said Hokitika River to the junction of the Hokitika and Whitcom.be Rivers; thence along the midstream of the Whitcombe River to the dividing range of Canterbury and Westland, thence N.E. along and bounded by the dividing range to the source of the Arablira River.; thence N.W., and N.W. along the midstream of the said AVahura River to Caledonian Creek; thence S. and \\ . through the midstream of the said creek to Douglitown; thence N.W. and W., bounded by Reserve No 145; thence N.W. passing Mt McKay to McKean’s water race; thence N.W. along the said water race to the junction of the Hau Hau and Brennan’s Creek at Cement Lead Track; thence S., along the said Cement Lead Track to the Hau Hau Road; thence W. along the said Hau Hau Road to Hokitika Borough Boundary and thence S.W. and N.W. along and bounded by the Borough of Hokitika to the Ocean Beach; thence S.W. along and bounded by the Ocean Beach to the commencing point. SOUTHERN RIDING.

Commencing at the Ocean Beach at the S.W. corner of Endowment Reserve No 271, thence extending along and bounded by southern part of Section 271 and thence S.E. along the northern shores of. Lake Mahinapua and thence along and bounded by the H.O. line to the Hokitika River; and thence S. aiong the midstream of the said Hokitika River to the Junction of the Hokitika and Whitcombe River, and thence S. along midstream of Whitcombe River to the dividing range between Canterbury and Westland; thence S.W. along and bounded by the dividing range of Canterbury and Westland; thence S.W. and W. along and bounded by the dividing range between Westland and Otago to Mt Aspiring and thence W. by direct line to the mouth of Awarua. River at Big Bay on the Ocean Beach, and thence N.E. along and bounded by the Ocean Beach to the most W. corner of the Borough of Ross; thence S.E. along the S. boundary of the said Borough; thence N.E. and N.W. along the boundary of the said Borough to the said Ocean Beach, and thence N.E. along the said Ocean Beach to the commencing point. Seconded by Cr. Duff and carried.

The Chairman moved:—“That the foi'pjgoing on becoming a resolution of the Council be confirmed at’ a subsequent meeting to he held on Tuesday, the 15th day of June, 1920, and public notice he given accordingly.” Seconded by Cr. Duff and carried.

ELECTRIC POWER BOARDS. Mr Park, County Solicitor, attended and gave particulars of the rcquiiemenfs necessary under the Act in lespect to drawing up a petition for signature regarding an Electric Power Board for Westland. ; A discussion ensued on boundaries, and it was resolved to include the area from Teremakau river to Mikonui river, and that the name of the proposed Board ho “Westland Electric Power Board,” with a proposed personnel of nine. The chairman was authorised to arrange for obtaining signatures, and tho preparation of the necessary maps of the district.

MINISTERIAL VISIT. (Minister of Public Works, Hon. J. G. Coates, Tuesday, May 19th, 1920.)

The following was the list of matters drawn up to hriDg under the notice of \ the Hon. Minister:—

I.—Dillmans Riding (Cr. Murdoch): —(a) Small bridges on crossings, Christchurch Road; (b) Kawhaka, Upper crossing road, re-opening, £300; (c) Kumara Junction, Awatuna road, vote expenditure £500; (d) Harris Creek bridge.

2. Stafford Riding (Cr. Duff).—(a) Footbridge atHungerfords, with north approach, £260; (b) grant towards Malfroy’s traffic bridge, £250 £ for £; o) expenditure Awatuna to Arahura road vote, £SOO. 3. —Arahura Riding (Cr Ward) : Arahura river protection, £IOOO.

- 4.—Kanieri Riding (Cr. Chosterman); —(a) Substantial grant for widening Kanieri Lake road, £3,500 (b) approval proposals Kanieri Lake road oridge, £3OO.

5. —Kokatahi Riding (Cr Morel): — (a) Expenditure road and bridge votes, (I)’Municipal road bridge, £300; (2) Wall road, £500; (b) grant for White road improvement £SOO, £ for £; (c) assistance towards drainage of swamp lands, Kokatahi and Koiterangi. 6. —Rimu Riding (Cr Wells): —(a) Vote for improving to Diggers sawmill site ,£150; (b) .vote for road South Hokitika to Maliinapua Falls, £250. '

7.—Totara Riding (the Chairman) : (a) Vote for road Ruatapu to Lake Maliinapua, £500; (b) bridging Little Waitaha. river main road votes, (e) extension Bold Head road.

B.—Okarito Riding (Cr Ferguson) : (a) bridging Little Wanganui rivCr and protection; (b) bridging Waitangi river, expend present vote £300; (c) bridging small streams, . main south road; (d) La Fontaine drainage; (e) Hari Hari district telephone;

9 Okuru Riding (Cr Grimmond)-: (a) Expenditure of votes: (1) Waikukupa bridge, £600; (2) Sliopery face deviation (most urgent) £500; (3) Main South road widenng ,Waiho to Welieka; (b) bridging Waiho river. General:—(l) Extension South "Westland railway; (2) improvement Okarito port; (3) landing 'at Bruce Bay; (4) cattle loading wharf at Okuru; (5) improvement Haast Pass track; (6) hydro electric power board.

It was resolved the Chairman and Cr MuVdoch meet the lion. Minister at Otira and escort- him to Kumara, and that on Tuesday the councillors meet the Minister at Arahura Valley, taking deputations at Hokitika at night. , Arrangements in connection with the tour were also fixed. A vote of £l9 was authorised for Fox’s road, and the Clerk directed to ask the attention of the Postal authorities to the change of the post office at Matanui.
