A CHILD KILLED. INVERCARGILL, May 6,
Mavis Green, the four-year-old daughter of a railway porter at Edendale, wap run over by a locomotive, death being instantaneous. The child was sent on a message which necessitated, crossing the line.
APPOINTMENTS IN SAMOA
WELLINGTON, May 6.
The “Gazette” notifies that the following have been appointed to the Legislative Council of Western Samoa: The holders for the time being of the Chief Judgeship, the Commissioner of Crown Estates, the Treasurer, and the Secretary for Native Affairs with Mossrs Keeling, Tattcrsall, and Syddall.
Colonel Tate has been appointed Administrator, and Mr R. MeK. Watson Chief Judge.
Other appointments are: Mr Woodward, Commissioner of the High Court; Mr Cotten, Secretary for Native Affairs; Mr Tennett, Treasurer; Mr Beaglehole, Director of Education; Captain°Carter, Chinese Commissioner; Mr J. C. Hill, Commissioner of Police.
DEATH OF CRIMEAN VETERAN AUCKLAND, May 7.
An old Crimean and Maori war veteran, Mr John Burns died to-day aged 88 years. The deceased leaves two ■sons and two daughters, including Mrs Charlton, of Wellington.
