The deceased was a daughter of Mrs Hamilton and of the i late Mr W. Hamilton of Marsden Road. ■ The house of a well-known citizen of 1 Akaroa might easily have been burnt down the other afternoon while he was busy at his office, as a ,result of a mysterious fire (says a correspondent). A lady of the household, the only inmate at the time, thought she smelt smoke. She traced this to an upstairs bedroom, one that had not been used for some time, the rest of the family' being away in the country. Here she ! discovered one or two articles of furni- ! tore, a patch of carpet on the floor and some woollen material on the dressing , table ail smouldering.
