LINER ON THE ROOKS, c HALIFAX, March 9. About 3 a.m. in a snowstorm, the Leyland- liner Bohemian (8,555 tons), crashed on the Broad Breaker ledge near the entrance to Halifax Harbour. The Bohemian, commanded by Captain E. C. Hiscoe, was bound from Boston to Liverpool and was calling at Halifax to take coal.
Immediately the captain sent out the S.Q.S. and the passengers were told to prepare to go ashore. A reply was received from the steamer Maplemore (4,330 tons), bound for Halifax, but, although the steamers could hear each other’s horns, it was impossible for one to see the other on account of the thick snow. The Maplemore stood by. When the message reached Halifax the tug Roebling was despatched to the steamer’s assistance.
In the meantime the passengers were put into boats and the boats were lowered to the water. For more than- three hours .the men, women, and children were tossed on the heavy swell. They were attached to the Bohemian by a tow-line, and on the arrival of the Roebling were allowed to drift over to the tuß,° and before long were in safety bn her’decks. About 9.30 the passengers reached Halifax.
