PROFITEERING
legal pkooledings taken
(Per Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH May 5
It is understood that tlio authorities in Wellington have authorised legal proceedings beiong taken against several Christchurch firms, who are alleged to have been making unreasonably high profits on tho stocks they have in hand.
The informations will conic before tho Magistrate’s Court probably next Wednesday.
The prices being charged for imported alarm clocks will form, it is stated one of the principal matters to bo investigated. There are other questions, however, of general interest to traders that w r il] arise out of the Magisterial enquiry.
One of these matters is the replace ment question. The point is as to whether an importer is justified in charging a price for goods in stock that were bought at a price lower than the now current price or a price equal to that wliiori lie would charge if he replaced his stock at the current wholesale prices. Another matter of interest to traders generally that is likely to arise out of the local prosecutions is with respect to the practice of tlie fixation of prices by tlie manufacturers and not the retailers. Thero are questions as to the contracts in which it is either implied or expressed that the dealer shall not sell the article at a lesser price than that fixed by tlie manufacturers.
