TWO BURGLARS KILLED.

! DAR,K CELLAR DUEL, j NEW YORK, Feb. 20

Two burglars were killed in a thrilling pistol duel in the dark cellar of a country house at Greenwich, Connecti-

cut, yesterday. Major Alden AleALurtry, U.S. Army, who with Air Addison Bacon was tho guest of Airs Eliza Alonlis, the owner of the house, killed the criminals. But the two men were themselves wounded. Air Bacon’s condition being critical. Tlie housekeeper was awakened early yesterday morning by flic sound of breaking glass. She informed the major, who, armed with a pistol, accompanied Mr Bacon, carrying a cudgel, and descended to the cellar. The major opened a. cupboard, turned on his Hashlight, and found a man hiding inside.. The burglar bred at Major AfcALurtry but missed. The major returned the lire, and the assailant dropped with a bullet through his abdomen. A third shot rang out from the other end of the cellar, revealing the presence of a second intruder. A fusillade followed, the two men aiming at the flashes of each other’s revolvers, one of the burglar’s bullets having smashed the major’s electric torch.

Three bullets went through his coat; another wounded him in tho groin. .Meantime Air Bacon worked round by the wall and grappled with the burglar, who fired at close quarters, hitting Air Bacon in the neck. The three moil struggled on the floor till tho burglar pulled anotuer pistol from his pocket and again opened fire. Air Bacon knocked the weapon from his l and. The major groped for it on the floor, found it by good luck, and shot the burglar through the head. When his body was examined it was found that the burglar had been hit live times.
