HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, APRIL 23rd. The Council met at 8 p.m. Present: Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), H. M. Coulson, J. J. Breeze, N. Warren, A. Parkhill, F. McGregor, G- H. Blanc, ; and J. King. . The minutes were confirmed and i-ir-i respondeneo outward approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Gisborne Borough Council conveying resolution urging the giving of ! municipal councils power to enter into commercial enterprises to reduce the eel :of living.—Received and resolved, to co-operate. From Postal Department stating resolve to arrange for providing list oi accommodation for visitors during the Royal Visit.—• Received. From Hokitika. ILawn Tennis Clue i asking for permission for Borough si'll to law down aspahlt court when hf- | vices are available and for an estimate of the cost to be supplied.—Received : the latter information to be provided, though it was considered the staff I would not he able to cany out the work. From Commissioner of Taxes asking for information.—Received; to he upplied. From Town Clerk, Ross supplyng receipts of license fees received, £275 I'd Bd.—Received.
EFFORTS. | From Treasurer reporting receipt £3lO 9s 2d, payments £ll6 17s 9d; ire! it balance £373 5s Gd.—Received. Accounts amounting to £243 Os Of were pasted for payment. Tenders were opened for clearing oir drain from Park to Tudor streets, Iron A. Robinson £l4 12s, T. Rouse 10/- p>*’ chain, D. Dooling 7/- per chain. Tin Render of A. Robinson was accepted. Mr Coulson said in view of Sir James Allen’s early departure for England ho would move—“ That a 'otter he sent to Sir James Allen on his retirement from Ministerial office, expressing this Council’s appreciation of tile splen'l'd service rendered to this country and to the Empire during his term of office, especially as Minister of Defence, recog- ! nising the gigantic work that lie so necessfully undertook under more trying and adverse circumstances and wishing him continued health and usefulness in his new sphere ns High Commissioner.” Seconded by Mr Breeze, who considered Sir James Allen deserved their very best thanks for his fine, work. Tiie Mayor supported and referred to the high praise paid Sir .Tames Allen by the Commissioner who visited New Zealand to enquire into the conduct of the Defence Department during the war. Mr Warren said ho could not conscientiously support the motion. A lot of his actions as a member of the Cabinet and Minister of Defence he was not in accord with and though ho wished him good health, he could not support the motion. Tito motion was then agreed t<\ Mr Warren dissenting. The Council rose at 8.30. p.m.
