COAL MINES TROUBLE

(Per Press Association.) AVELLtINGTON, 'April 20. The Prime Minister was asked whether he had taken any action in connection with the threatened coal mines trouble. He replied that, in his opinion, the trouble was not serious, and he hoped that the misunderstanding would soon bo at an end. It is understood that the disagreement between tile Federation of Coal Aliners and the companies is ill regard to tlie interpretation of one of the clauses of the agreement which has to do with the payment of a minimum wage of 12s per day to men 'employed in faces of the mines where it is not possible for them to make a living wage at tlie contract rates of pay, owing to the difficulty of winning coal in tliope places. The question arose as to whether this minimum of 12s. should carry an increase of 50- per cent or of 60 per cent., a point on which the clause was not definite.

ATr ATossey stated he had been advised that the companies had agreed to pay at the 60 per c-ent rate, and were now doing so. It is not known here exactly what the cause of the present disagreement; but if it should prove to be so then the matter seems to have been settled to the satisfaction of tbe unions. PRICE OF COAL. ‘ - CHRISTCHURCH, April 20. A. retail rise in price on all classes of coal is shortly to lie announced.
