MAN WITH 500 BANK ACCOUNTS
NEW YORK, Feb. 24. The search for the “master mind” in conspiracy by which Wall-street brokers in the last few months have been robbed of £200,000 worth of securities has led to a dramatic investigation into the domestic affairs of the popular music-hall actress,, Miss Fannie Brice. The. conspiracy aimed at the organisation of messenger boys trained to steal bonds and other papers on the way from the vaults to the brokers’ offices. It is alleged that Nicolas Arnstein acted as leader of the boys and succeeded in hiding in bank accounts opened under different names mere than £200,000 of loot. Arnstein disappeared a few days ago.
It is now discovered that he is the husband of Miss Fannie Brice, who with him, as Mr and Mrs Arnold, has been occupying an expensive flat in a fashionable quarter of New York. The couple lived on a lavish scale, keeping four servants, “a phenomenal number in New York,” and several motor-cars. Miss’Brice explained to-the police her manner of living. She said that her husband earned practically nothing and that the costs of the - household were borne'by her out of tlie-proceeds of her salary, £l2O a week from the Ziegfehl Midnight Follies, and her dressmaking establishment in Fifth-avenue. The popular actress appeared as usual on Saturday night, and yesterdy protested her belief in her husband’s innocence. She said that tho frequently left her for a, month without declaring his whereabouts. At the instance of the National Security Company,’Miss'Brico has been temporarily enjoined from drawing on her hank accounts, which the company believes contain money stolon by Arnstein. Miss Brico says that she has only two deposit accounts with her own money. Tho company altogether has attached 500 accounts held in different names in different banks throughout tlio country.
