BRITISH BUDGET
BUDGET CRITICISED. [AUSTRALIAN A N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION] (Received this day at 11.30 a.m.) • LONDON, April 20. The Budget received much criticism from the Government benches. It is probable the Budget will get more support from the Opposition than from the Government’s side, though the Oppositinists deplore the dropping of the 1 render's land taxes. The maiiv criticism is directed against the increase on excess profit*, which surprised many people who expected a reduction thereof, if not the abolition. i Commoners and others representing trading and manufacturing interests declare they will hamper the country’s reconstruction, and cause a rise in prices, thus damaging the country’s export • Supporters of the tax consider that prices won’t be affected as the prices rose after the tax passed. Hon Chamberlain’s proposals on the whole are regarded as a courageous attempt to adjust the country’s incoming and outgoings, and 11 reduce the national debt.
