WESTLAND WAR MEMORIAL.

THE FUND GROWING

The special effort now being made to ‘raise £1,500 by next Sunday for the War Memorial to Westland’s fallen, will be continued daily throughout this week. The wet week-end militated against the canvassing in the country districts ,and there was a falling off in the reports yesterday. The town collectors. were held up also by the weather yesterday but during the remainder of the week the collectors will require to be' busy to cover the balance of their territory. The total of the fund at noon to-day was £567, leaving a balance of £933 to be raised in the remaining five days of the collecting campaign. The period for the collection is fixed to close on Sunday next, Anzac Day, when the foundation stone of the Avar memorial will be laid on Cass Square, The actual'ceremony will be performed by Lieut .S. Frickleton V.C. who is com ing very kindly from Westport to perform the very thoughtful service for his old comrades. No doubt a large concourse of people will be drawn to next Sunday’s special ceremony. Additional names continue to be received for enrolment on ‘ the Stone of Remembrance. The Committee will be j glad of all names available. Th© re- ' vised and supplementary list will be published with the leaflet containing the order of the memorial service for ; next Sunday’s, ceremony.

The augmentation of the memorial fund should appeal strongly to the country district people. So many of the men hailed from the country that the appeal should have an appealing effect to residents of the country to see the movement well supported from that quarter. The sacrifice made by the men was the contributing cause to the final victory which gave honor and security to the victorious. That noble sacrifice and all that it entailed should not go unrecorded.
