PONSONBY MURDER

EVIDENCE AGAINST GUNN

AUCKLAND, April 16

At the trial of Gunn for the murder of Braithwaite, evidence was given by Wiggs, who said he saw a man whom he now knew to bo Gunn in the vicinity of the office about 2.30 p.m on the day of the tragedy. Later in tho day he saw him at the same place between three and four o’clock.. Another man was with him and witness since identified him as prisoner’s brother Charles. Witness said he saw prisoner again with the same man about G p.m. immediately outside M -« Post Office. Before ho went home he saw prisoner at the same place alono. On the 6th March lie isaw Charles Gunn among about 150 people and identified him. A lady witness gave evidence that sho saw accused between 7 and 7.10 a.m. on the 13tli March (the day of the murder) when she saw and spoke to Braithwaite as he entered the Pe.st Office.

Evidence was given that the * v ’~ door of the Post Office was locked shortly after C p.m. by a telegraph messenger, who put the keys in the letter box according to custom and by a telegraph operator who locked the be'b window at 5.30 p.m. Further evidence was given as to the money in the strong room including a Bank of New Zealand note, particularly crumpled and a cancelled postal note. No. 338,57, hearing the office stamp and the initials of witness.
