WESTLAND WAR MEMORIAL.

NOTES ON COLLECTIONS.

Mr J. D. Lynch, Mayor of Greymouth, has subscribed £25 to the Westland Memorial. Mr Lynch’s younger brother, Tom, a native of Hokitika, was killed in the Great War. The Trustees of the Hokitika Savings Bank yesterday subscribed £2OO out of surplus profits to the War Memorial Fund. This will be a welcome contribution to the fund which is now rising substantially. The total of the fund to-day is £402 10s, leaving £1097 10s to be raised with in the next week. Collectors in town and country will continue their campaign actively for the remainder of the period. To-night and next Saturday night Mr Preston’s premises in Revell Street, fronting Weld Street, will be open for ; the receipt of subscriptions. Amounts received will be allocated to the various , districts.

A number of large subscriptions are expected to come in immediately, and it is hoped by Tuesday to have half the money required in sight. It is expected that the country districts will respond liberally and assist to complete the fund within the stipulated period. It is expected that at the laying of the. foundation stone on Anzac Day there will be a. large concourse of people present. The ground will be prepared for the ceremonial during the week. There is the promise of a large muster of returned soldiers for the occasion, and the band will attend. Relatives of all soldiers who served in the war are in vited to be present, and special accommodation will be provided for them.
