One day only was spent in Honolulu by the Renown, but enough romance interest, find imihsunl entertainment was compressed into the brief visit of tli Prince to suffice foi: a week. A whisper went round early in the day that the Prince proposed to try surf riding at Waikiki beach quietly by himself, after a public exhibition of surf riding by experts. It- was concluded that everybody in the city heard the whisoer within half an hour as if it
; lutd been shouted by San Diego’s mugna ■ vox. A largo proportion of the entire j population of Honolulu assembled in I bathing costumes on the beach in the. j afternoon, bathing being entirely sus- . pended. The jetty from Mamma Hotel | was packed from end to end with cam- ‘ era men and cinema operators; who j erected machines on native outrigger canoes and waited in the surf in imminent risk of a catastrophe, for the shore was obscured by the crowds of rainbow colours of (bathers. Cheers went up when the Prince' emerged for a little quiet enjoyment from the new wing of the hotel. He wore an ordinary swimming costume of blue edged with a red stripe. Duke Kahanamoku, the famous Hawaiian swimmer, attended with a native outrigger canoe. Amid enthusiastic cheers the Prince and party shoved off, the Hawiian taking the, steering, ■paddle. The Prince occupied thwart taking the paddle next the Hawiian. The party paddled out a mile, coming back at the speed of an express train surrounded by cinemas and camera men and observers with powerful glasses.
