TRIALS OF HARRIER LIFE
CHARLIE CHAPLIN IN TROUBLE,
VANCOUVER, March 13.
The Los Angeles “Examiner” says that Mrs Mildred Harris Chaplin, the wife of Charlie Chaplin, will take court action unless her husband returns to her. She has not 'seen him for a fortnight, asserts the “Examiner.” Later, an article in the newspaper by a woman who said she was Chaplin’s secretary, stated that there was no difficulty between the Chaplins, and declared they were living together. “Such is life in the Groat West,” said Charlie Chaplin, when shown the newspaper interview in which his wife charged that he had, not been living with her for several months. She said: “I am forced to conclude that lie does not want to live with mo. I don’t want divorce or money, but must have support.” She added that she bad placed the matter in the hands of her attorney, and must seek divorce unless conditions wore remedied.
VANCOUVER, March 20. A message from Los Angelos says that Charlie Chaplin has issued a hot denial of his wife’s charge of failure to support her. “] have,” lie said, “more than £.10,000 worth of cancelled cheques that I paid on her behalf during our brief married life.” This amount was additional to her salary of over £2OO veek-
“Until her outbreak,” lie added, “I did not refuse payment of one solitary request or bill she presented. I tried to be. gentlemanly and act with dignity.” When shown Chaplin’s statement Mrs Chaplin said: “Previously 1 did not intend to press the charge of nonsupport, but to base a claim for divorce on Charlie’s desertion and cruelty. But,” she declared, “f shall do so now, showing how he, failed to provide for me.” It looks as though the “Examiner” was engineering the whole nll'nir!
