A manifesto issued by the Trades Union Congress in support of a fortyfour hour week movement, states though the eight hours day was secured in 1856, the workers have since marked time and have failed to secure one hour of additional leisure, despite the fact that they are directly respon- ( sible for the commercial development which, reduced the cost of production of commodities and services. j | shortage of hours. 1 SYDNEY, This Day. | The Basic Wage Commission is piling up evidence of the scarcity of houses in j the Metropolitan area, which are prac- j tically unprocurable, though big bon- j uses are offered. There has been a big advance in rent and prices of land and houses and instances have been giv--en where both the latter have been doubled since 1914.

INFLUENZA CLAIMS. SYDNEY, This Day
Claims« for compensation against Government, arising ut of the influenza epidemic, amount to £350,000.
ARBITRATION QUESTION. MELBOURNE, This Day. In the Federal House of Representatives, Mr Hughes, referring to arbitration, said the question involved won id be looked at from a non-party standpoint. The Ministry hoped the conference (cabled yesterday) would formulate some scheme, and perhaps would take the form of one great Council of Labour, charged with the preservation of industrial peace, but until the employers realised the employee was a full partner, they would not get a satisfactory solution.
STEAMSHIP COMPANIES’ CLAIM. (Received this day at 10.35 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Federal Government is considering claims for compensation by the steamship companies for the laying up of coastal fleets during the marine engineers’ strike. The companies' claim that had they 'been permitted they could have provided crews for the vessels.
SURPLUS CANTEEN FUNDS. MELBOURNE, This Day. Tn the Senate, Mr Pearce introduced a Bill creating a trust to deal with surplus canteen funds, which will he transferred to a Board of Trustees, who will deal with applications for assistance from the fund, for relatives of deceased soldiers.
. COMMONWEALTH SHIPPING. MELBOURNE, This Day. In the House of Representatives, Mr Hughes stated the conditions under which Government control of shipping was lifted. There were to be no ships taken off the coast without permission, a „d no increase of fares and freights without submitting them to Government.
FEDERAL MINISTERS’ SALARIES. MELBOURNE, This Day. In the House, Mr Hughes said he would ask them to express an opinion on salaries of the Ministry and the heads of departments, which were giosslv inadequate.
FEDERAL SHIPPING. MELBOURNE, This Day. Replying to a deputation of unionists, urging Government to arrange further snip-building contracts, Mr Poyn on stated the Ministry had decided to build eleven ships of 11,800 tons each and to maintain a. fortnightly service to the United Kingdom. The Ministry’s policy was to continue building but it must have a continued guarantee from the Union.

A south-west gale was blowing ,and a rough sea was running at the time of the grounding. N .S. W. POLITICS. .SYDNEY, This Day. Edward Ivavanagh, a former President of the Labour Council was appointed Vice President of the Executive Council, and Leader of the Government in the Upper House. Air Fuller has been elected Leader of the Nationalist Party. It was decided to approach the Progressives with a view to co-operation.
LEAKING SLIGHTLY. MELBOURNE, This Day. The Westralia is leaking slightly, but is in no danger.
