HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
TUESDAY, APRIL 13th
The Council held the adjourned or-! dinary meeting at 7.45 p.m. Present. ; Messrs G. A. Perry, (Mayor), G. ; Wood, J. J. Breeze, H. A. Thompson, ■■ A. Parkhill J. King, G- H. Blank and ■ N. Warren. Apologies were made for ; Messrs Coidson and McGregor. The minutes were confirmed and correspondence outward approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Hon W. F. Massey, acknowledging resolution of Council in favour, of a bonus for parents of all British born children, and stating that legislation would bo necessary to give effect to tbe resolution. —Received. From Westland County Council, expressing surprise at the decision of the Council in connection with the clearin.r out of the growth in Mahinapua Creek and asking for further reconsideration —Received. From J. Ritchie and others, drawing attention to necessity of repairs to Waterway and footpaths in Park Street.— Received and referred to the Overseer to attend to. Form State Advances Office asking for information as to work requested to 1,-, done by Health Department by a bo useliolder.—Received ; a reply in the negative to be sent. From Mrs M. Gooch, notifying transfor of lease to her son.— Received and approved. From A. Aitken, offering to lease fenced off portion of Cass Square till August next at rental of £2. Received." Tlio Overseer recommended that tho area be closed for a month and then that tenders he invited to lease for grazing purposes till October. Mr Breeze moved in accordance with the Overseer’s report; seconded by Mr Parkhill. and carried. From -Lewis and Wells, claiming £ls damages, on behalf of Mrs J. Foote, caused by being thrown out of a trap by striking a fire ping at the comei ol Sale Street and Gibson Quay.—Received. Mr Thompson stated ho had inspected the position shortly after the accident, which was not caused by the fire plug. It was resolved to disclaim all liability.
From N. Z. Educational Institute, Hastings, asking for opinion on questions as to injury caused by children attending picture shows.—Received. It was resolved to reply that the pictures as shown were not suitable for children and were injurious to them; aud that there should he a stricter censorship: and that no children under ten years of ago ho a I lowed to attend. From T. Condon and others asking that the drain between Park and Tudor streets be cleaned out.— Received. It was resolved to have tho work carried out. From Westland Charitable Aid Board forwarding proposed levy for ensuing year and inviting Council to send representatives to tho confirmatory meeting to confer with the Board, if it were so desired. The total required from contributing bodies was £4BOI allotted as fol lows:—Westland County Council £3410 14s lid (per month £284 4s 7d), Hokitika Borough Council £1144 Gs lid (per month £95 7s 3d), Rumara Borough Council £134 16s 6d (per month £ll 4s 8d), Ross Borough Council £lll Is 8d (per month £9 5s 2d.')—Received.
Air AAtood moved that Alcssrs Thompson and Warren be delegated to confer with the Board. Seconded by Mr Parkhill and carried. Air Blank said lie did not think it possible to reduce the amount of the levy. Mr Perry said lie was quite satisfied that the figures could not he reduced without having a deficit at the end of the year. Mr Breeze said there was no doubt that the increase was due to tho increased cost of living. Air Warren endorsed and said it was right, the Council should take advantage of the offer to confer with tho Board. From A. A. Andrewes, Town Clerk, applying for twelve days leave. Received; request granted. REPORTS.
From Treasurer reporting receipts £036 11s 9d; payments, £652 5s 6d; credit balance, £179 15s Id. Received. From Finance Committee recommending payment of accounts amounting to £3Bl 15s 6d; and passing of formal authority to borrow up to £BOO. —Received and adopted. From Manager Abattoirs (J. barman) reporting having examined foi month of March, 7 cows, 77 bullocks, 200 sheep, 181 lambs, 4 pigs and 15 calves; fees for month £65 8s 3d. Re-
ceived. On the motion of Messrs Blank and King it was resolved to continue the asphalting work in Sewell Street between Weld Street and the Rost Office. Mr Parkhill drew attention to the danger at the corners of Sewell and Weld Streets through the cars cutting the corners too closely. Referred to Overseer to look into.
